Question:icdbd-QA/0008
Assalamu Alaykum,
I have a 2-part question on zakah:
a) How is zakah to be calculated on gold jewelery? By weighing the total gold or excluding the impurity (khaad)?
b) Is zakah to be given on gold jewelery only, or it includes stones and diamonds as well?
Please shed some light on this issue.

JazakAllahu khair

Answer
:

Wa ‘Alaikumussalaam.

Praise be to Allaah.

a) You should know the present market value – theoretically something like taking the gold to market and ask the goldsmith:”Look I want to sell this, how much you are going to pay me?” So, he will offer a price depending on the type and age of your gold. You should pay zakaah on that!!

Please refer to the following ruling from Islam-Q-A:

http://www.islam-qa.com/en/ref/43033/gold%20zakaah

b) If you are not trading stones and diamonds – they are just your personal assets, then you do not have to pay zakaah on those.

Again, please refer to the following ruling from Islam-Q-A:

http://www.islam-qa.com/en/ref/40210/zakaah%20on%20stones

And Allah knows the best!
